Parkign in the centre of the old towns is limited in the main to residents and a few paying car parks. Tavira is a nice town but the beach is on island reachable only by ferry or water taxi. That's only a 10 - 15 minute trip down the river, not a pain at all. There are no roads once over there and although it's very popular with locals it's easy to find a quiet spot. Quarteira has an excellent beach and is still to some extent a working town with commercial fishing boats, probably worth a look as it's not overwhelmed by mass tourism - yet.
Thanks for the response. If we were to take the rental car over to the Algarve we would drive it back to return it to Spain. Just thought it might be easier to get around if we were to go to the Algarve.
Just out of curiosity, out of those few "touristy" towns that you named - Vilamoura , Albufeira , Praia da Rocha and Alvor , which would be least touristy? We don't mind some hotels, and are willing to take a look at them. Which one would you recommend out of those? Seach Google Images for those Algarve places and try to ignore the hype! For example here is Praia da Rocha from the air - comissao-apoio-cpr3.
Albufeira is a town of 25, that swells to a city of , in summer. I am British by the way, one of several thousand ex-pats who live here in the Algarve.

The pictures you will see on line are mostly of the beach and the old part of town. But as ptnov64 says, if Marbella is on your itinerary, then the big resorts of the Algarve won't seem strange.
